Dental disease is the most common disease seen in dogs and cats today. Dental care can be expensive. In March we are offering some fantastic dental health promotions that will keep your pet's smile looking (and smelling) great!
Contact us at (403) 253-7044 or email at info@calgaryvet.com to book your pet in for a dental cleaning or inquire further
Preventative Measures
There are a number of things you can do to help prevent dental disease or limit the number of dental procedures your animal may need in a lifetime.  Brushing is the best, just like what your own dentist would recommend. Though it’s ideal to brush every day it’s not possible for most people, so we recommend at least twice a week.

There are also a number of foods and treats available that will help prevent tartar build up or help scrape debris off, such as Royal Canin Dental or Hills Prescription Diet t/d. You can also use Enzadent or C.E.T. Oral Chews, which combine enzymes found naturally in your pet’s saliva and the abrading action of chewing to help remove debris before it becomes an issue.
You can also look for other products such as oral rinses that can be added to the water or applied directly to the teeth and gums.

What Does a Dental Cleaning Involve?
  • Anaesthetised examination of the structures noted above, in addition to a complete exam of the mouth, teeth, and  inside the throat.
  • Cleaning (above & below the gum line). The tartar and plaque are removed using an ultra-sonic scaler or hand scaler.
  • Polishing. This removes any fine scratches left on the tooth surface. This makes it harder for bacteria to stick to the tooth.
  • Post cleaning exam and diagnostics. During this part of the procedure, the depth of the pockets around each tooth is checked to look for periodontal disease. In many cases, we also use disclosing solution to detect any hidden plaque or tartar that remains. During this step, if extractions are expected, patients will also get dental x-rays. Dental x-rays will often reveal problems that cannot be seen on visual examination alone.
  • Charting. Charting allows for better communication in and between clinics, as well as providing a record that can be used for future comparisons.
  • Radiographs. The doctor may take radiographs to look for abscesses, root degeneration, or fractures.
  • Extractions. Teeth may be pulled if they are mobile. The roots are abscessed, if the tooth is fractured or the pulp cavity is exposed.
  • Antiseptic Rinse. Helps to prevent infection after the dental procedure.
