Laser Therapy
What is it?
Photobiomodulation (PBMT), or laser therapy, is a modality used in the treatment of a wide variety of medical and surgical conditions in animals. Through the use of light photons directed into tissue, laser therapy acts on cellular pathways in the body to reduce inflammation, facilitate healing, and decrease pain.
Laser therapy is painless and non-invasive. The light creates a soothing warmth at the site of penetration and causes release of endorphins in many patients.
What conditions can be helped with laser therapy?
Laser therapy is beneficial for any condition that is associated with pain or inflammation.
Examples of common situations where laser therapy can benefit your pet include treatment of post-surgical or dental extraction sites, wounds, tendon or ligament injuries, arthritis, lick granulomas, and otitis (ear inflammation).
Your veterinarian will create a laser therapy plan that is appropriate to ensure your pet receives the greatest benefit for their specific health needs.
How many sessions does it require?
Laser therapy provides its greatest benefits with cumulative sessions. The exact number of treatments will depend on the type of condition being treated as well as how your individual pet responds.
Mild, superficial injuries may benefit with only a couple of sessions. Chronic, painful or deeper inflammatory conditions often see greatest benefit within 6-8 sessions.
After an initial induction period (several sessions close together) of laser therapy, many pets with chronic conditions can benefit from maintenance doses every 1-3 months. These maintenance laser sessions are an easy, non-invasive way to provide pain relief and improve mobility, while also providing regular touch points between you and your pet’s health care team.
What happens during a laser therapy session?
Laser therapy sessions are performed in a private room with a trained veterinary technician.
*While we remain curbside, treatment will be done without clients in the building. Once we fully reopen we will be happy to have clients with their pets during the laser treatment appointment.
